My name is Dale Barker and I am a twenty eight year member of the fire service in St. Lawrence County and the First Vice President of the St. Law. County Fire Chief’s Association and I have been recently diagnosed with Cancer of the Left Kidney on February 16th, 2016. As I was fighting my fight against this life threatening disease I was fortunate to receive support from across the state. The support came from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and the Believe 271 from Oneida and Herkimer Counties along with many individual fire departments across the North Country.
In March 2016 during the St. Law County Fire Chief’s Association meeting in Edwards, the organization decided to support an organization that can support our brothers and sisters in the fire service for when they are facing a life threatening disease like cancer.
The discussion of this type of organization for our brothers and sisters was then presented to the Northern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association (NNYVFA) which oversees the following counties: Clinton, Hamilton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Lewis, Jefferson, Oswego, Herkimer, and Oneida. Since Herkimer and Oneida have already established their own program in the Believe 271, I then approached NNYVFA at the Pre-Convention meeting held on May 1st in West Carthage and the motion was made to support the creation of an organization that will support our brothers and sisters across the Northern Region. The motion was passed and I was selected to Chair the committee and to get the organization information together and present the information to the committee at the June 3rd meeting in West Carthage.
The organization will be referred to as BELIEVE NNY and our mission statement is as follows:
Mission Statement: To provide financial assistance for housing, mileage, resource material and contacts to volunteer firefighters, EMTs, and members of the ladies auxiliary in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties who suffer from a life threatening illness, such as cancer.
As we move forward we will be asking a representative from each county to sit on the board and work to create bylaws and to move forward in creating a 501©(3) organization to allow us to support our brothers and sisters in the fire service.
So please share the information above with all fire and rescue departments within your service area and we look forward to working with each and every one and providing assistance to those in need through fund raisers and the sale of shirts and helmet decals.
Current supporters are the St. Law County Fire Chief’s Association, NNYVFA, and the Lewis County Office of Emergency Management. I will be attending a meeting with the Franklin County Fire Advisory Board on May 16th in Owls Head to create some interest from their organization. The Clinton County Fire Advisory Board is also discussing this topic at their meeting this month and Essex County has been presented with the idea and will be discussing this further.
Feel free to contact myself if there are any questions

Greetings from Rome, NY! My name is Amy Evans and I’m a proud member of the Lake Delta VFD. I serve as Vice President of the department and also President of the Ladies Auxiliary. I’m a big fan and supporter of Believe 271. Brian McQueen has become one of my greatest encouragers. I’m also surviving and fighting CML (chronic myeloid leukemia). I wanted to send a message your way to applaud you and cheer you on as you start up Believe NNY. It’s been amazing to see the impact Believe 271 has had and I know it will continue to do great things. Your starting Believe NNY is proof of that amazing impact Believe 271 has had. This is a great ‘trend’ to be starting! I wish you much success and look forward to following your group to see all that you will do. I’m excited to order my decals. My family will proudly display decals and I will make sure to encourage my firehouse family to do the same. Wondering if I could send a note with what size/quantity I’d like and send a check, then decals could be mailed to me? What would the shipping cost be? I’ll look forward to hearing from you!
With sincere best wishes,
My name is Amy Conger. In March of 2016 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I set my mind to beating the “Monster”!!!
I am a single mother of a GREAT Daughter who just turned 16 in October. She is my caregiver. She sat with me all summer while I was sick and going through my 16 rounds of chemo and never left my side. When friends would go to the river to go swimming she stayed with me. She learned what medicine I was to take and what to do if I became really ill. She is my Angel.
Different from most who go through treatment, I chose to work. I am an Executive Chef at SUNY Potsdam and I LOVE my job. Fortunately, it is slower in the summer and I didn’t have many stressful days. My employers PACES were great and worked with me as I took this journey. Even now as I am finishing radiation they are working with my schedule. I am the type of person who cannot sit at home. It was better for me to keep busy and my brain on other things.
As of now I am doing 21 round of radiation, I am almost complete. My Christmas present will be completing treatment and starting the new year off Cancer Free!!!
Thank you Amy
My name is Greg Steiner and I'm a volunteer firefighter with Rodman Fire Dept and my wife is a member of our auxiliary. I've heard about this organization but I haven't really looked into it until now. My wife, Tina, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma last month at the beginning of March. She has started chemo and is doing ok. She's getting the chemo locally here in Watertown. Our insurance is handling everything for now. She has 2 more rounds of chemo before they recheck her bone marrow to see how well the chemo has worked and whether she is a candidate for a bone marrow biopsy. At that point we'll probably have to go to a cancer center. We really don't know what the future holds until she finishes this course of chemo. We haven't run into any financial issues yet. I guess I'm writing to you to ask mainly for your prayers. We've never been s family to ask anyone for help. Always just took care of our own. This experience has definitely been humbling. We don't need help right now but I can see where others going thru something like this might. I've been fortunate to be able to be with my wife 24/7 and she is my first and most important priority but I would like to do what I can to promote your organization. I plan on bringing it up at our next department meeting. Do you have any info I could distribute to our department members? Sorry for rambling on but Thank You for having this organization.Testimonial *
"Hello, Greetings from Madrid Rescue, my name is Schiler Ashley, I'm a big support of Believe NNY for all the support that they can give to our brothers and sisters of not only the Fire service but the volunteer rescue agencies as well.
I myself was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and Dale and the whole Believe NNY team have offered many services to me from help with the expenses to a ear to vent to, this is a great organization that will only grow with time to help our locals who dedicate time to help others. This group surely rescues the rescuers."
